Coach and Athletics Director: Sidelines

Volume 1
June - July 2007

Welcome to the debut of Sidelines, Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director's new e-mail newsletter for coaches and athletic administrators. It will be arriving in your inbox monthly during the summer and twice-a-month when the new school year kicks off.

Sidelines will bring you late-breaking stories, links to Coach & AD editorial features, news you need from manufacturers and suppliers, and a chance to interact with fellow coaches and ADs on topics of mutual interest. It will also provide you with an opportunity to tell our editors about topics you need to know more about.

Our staff is also hard at work totally redesigning and redeveloping the magazine's Web site, www.coachad.com. We're adding more editorial from current issues, tons of material from Coach & AD's 76 years of unmatched archives, a new information link for schools planning to build or renovate facilities, an on-line version of our annual Facility & Equipment Buyers' Guide, and much more. You'll even have a chance to enter the monthly Coach & AD sweepstakes to win valuable prizes.

You know you can always count on Coach & AD for in-depth coaching information. In fact, the Person-to-Person cover story in the upcoming August issue will feature Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr–along with the Powerline, A.D.Ministration, our annual Guide to Fund Raising, and the wide variety of technical information that readers have come to rely on for three-quarters of a century.

And please let us know what you'd like to see in Sidelines by e-mailing our newsletter editor, Kevin Newell: knewell@scholastic.com.
Have a great summer!

The 4-3 as a H.S. Defense
The 4-3 defense has enjoyed a resurgence at every level of football since the late 1980's thanks much to (1) Jimmy Johnson at the U. of Miami and the Dallas Cowboys, (2) the popularity of one-back and spread offenses, (3) the increased emphasis on passing, and (4) the even-front defense.

Did You See This...
Joe Pa Lays Down the Law
In the wake of six Penn State football players being arrested and charged with an off-campus altercation this spring, legendary Nittany Lions' coach Joe Paterno has issued a team-wide mandate: Clean Up Your Act! Literally.

Starting this fall, the players will be responsible for cleaning Beaver Stadium following home games. If the players think squaring off against the likes of Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Ohio State for four quarters will be a chore, wait until they have to pick up the empty soda bottles, food wrappers, and assorted garbage that will be strewn all over the 107,282 seat stadium for Penn State's seven home dates.

Trivia question:
Who was the first player to make a three-point shot in modern college basketball history? Email the correct answer to knewell@scholastic.com by 11:59pm on July 11, 2007 to enter for the chance to win a Coach & AD golf shirt (ARV: $26.55). We'll pick one winner and notify him/her on or about July 18, 2007.*

*NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Only coaches and athletic directors in U.S. high schools and colleges are eligible to enter. Void where prohibited and in Puerto Rico. For complete rules go to www.coachad.com.
