Texas and Florida Flex Collective Muscle, Enact Mandatory Steroid Testing for High School Athletes

Following the one-year anniversary of New Jersey becoming the first state to require steroid testing for high school athletes, Texas and Florida have followed suit, with Illinois - the No. 4 state in high school sports participation - poised to become the fourth state to adopt testing measures.

Texas Governor Rick Perry on June 15 signed into law the most expansive high school steroids testing program in the country. Four days later, on June 19, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist signed into law House Bill 461, the culmination of more than three years of diligent work by Representative Marcelo Llorente to address the use of anabolic steroids by student-athletes. Both testing policies will be in place beginning with the falls sports’ season.

Did You See This...
Youth is Served…Again
University of Southern California men’s basketball coach Tim Floyd is either the best visionary talent evaluator in the country or he has an infinite number of scholarships at his disposal. How else to explain the fact that he has received his second verbal commitment from an eighth-grader in as many years?

Ryan Boatwright, 5-foot-10, 145-pound incoming high school freshman point guard from Illinois, declared for the Trojans even before deciding which high school he would attend (a toss-up between East and West Aurora High). Floyd offered Boatwright on the final day of the USC summer basketball camp.

A year ago, Floyd and his staff received a verbal from Dwayne Polee, Jr., a then 6-foot-6 14-year-old forward who had yet to play his first game at Westchester High in Los Angeles.

There’s no truth to the rumor that Pete Carroll has received a verbal commitment from a 10-year-old Pee Wee Football quarterback from Arizona.
