Hey there!
Lately, I've been completely psyched about art class. Last week we learned about still lifes and we had to draw a bowl of fruit -- which was kind of boring. But now we are which is so cool. I did one that was in a style my teacher Mr. McConnell said reminded him of Edgar Degas. Isn't that great? Naturally, when I got home, I went online to look him up. I found all kinds of stuff, including this awesome new book series called Portraits. The first book, Dancing Through Fire, actually features a painting by Degas. How perfect is that? I told Lesa, Kate, and Jenni about the series and they were really excited too. Then, Lesa had a great book club idea -- that we all do portraits of each other in the style of the artist of each book. We've done two styles so far. It's really fun. And I'm not just saying that because Mr. McConnell says I have talent -- although it doesn't hurt! :)
XOXO, CJ

Dancing Through Fire

Of Flowers and Shadows

This Month's Book

We’re reviewing two books this time! That’s because they’re both part of a new series called Portraits. The cool thing about this series is that each book features a famous painting and imagines the characters from each painting into real life! It’s a totally cool concept and you learn a lot about art and history in a fun way.

Dancing Through Fire is based on a painting by Edgar Degas. Set in 1870 Paris, it stars Sylvie, a student at the Paris Opera Ballet. Thirteen-year-old Sylvie hopes to become a prima ballerina—until war breaks out.

Of Flowers and Shadows is based on a painting by Winslow Homer. Set in 1879 Massachusetts, it stars Aurelia, an orphan who flees her past and makes a new friend who happens to be the famous painter Winslow Homer.
