CJ's Sweeps

The Year of Secret Assignments CJ Says:

Lydia, Cassie and Emily are in 10th grade at a school called Ashbury and they are totally not psyched by their English teacher’s assignment that makes them be pen-pals with kids at the worst school in the area. They’re afraid of who they’ll end up writing to… and then thing start to change when they find out their [boy!] pen-pals are cooler than they thought they’d be.

JENNI SAYS:

Happy Bunny may be the funniest bunny ever. It is certainly honest when it comes to observations on love-as we see in It's Happy Bunny: Love Bites. Cute bunnies. Quizzes. Notes. Break-up info. What more do you need in a book? I can't think of a thing. Lucky for me, Jim Benton, the writer and author of the Happy Bunny series, thought of it all!

Telephone advice. A fun maze! Questions! Answers! You may not finish this book knowing all the answers to life's burning love questions, but you will come out with an understanding of the special perspective that only a happy ax-wielding bunny can give you. And anyway, who looks to a bunny for serious advice? Everyone knows it's all about the fun and laughs—for those sick of all the tooth-rotting sweet lovers of love out there.

I laughed. I cried. I couldn't put it down.

When CJ left for New York, we were all a little jealous. We made her promise to bring back a great book for our club. When we saw the cover of THE AMAZING DAYS OF ABBY HAYES, it was just too perfect — Abby had on this awesome bandana and she was dragging her purple suitcase behind her. We immediately fell in love with Abby and couldn’t wait to read about her.

We all loved the story too. Abby has twin sisters and a little brother — she calls them “SuperSibs” (because they are all really good at something). Abby thinks she’s not special — but she’s totally wrong. She likes to write and is super-creative. And she’s funny too.

The book we read was about Abby’s spring break and a trip she took to see her Grandma Emma. Her grandma enrolled her in a book-making workshop during her visit, which inspired us to make our own books.

When I got my invitation for CJ's Halloween sleepover, I immediately raced out to the bookstore to get my copy of The Girl, the Dragon and the Wild Magic. I am not normally a big fan of books about magic. But once I started reading it, I realized it wasn't all about magic and spells. It was mostly about friends, family, trust and believing in yourself. That sounds a little dorky, I know, but when I finished reading it, I had this big smile on my face.

My favorite character other than Rhianna is her friend Rose. Rose reminds me a lot of Jenni because in third grade I used to get picked on by these mean girls and Jenni was always there for me. Just like Rose is always there for Rhianna. That's what I mean about friendship that is so cool.

I think I'll read it once more before the party — I can't wait to hear what Jenni, Lesa and CJ have to say! Click here to read more about Rhianna in The Girl, the Dragon and the Wild Magic!

CJ SAYS:

We chose this book because of my vacation to New York — and found a really cool read! The story takes place in New York — and it definitely made me excited to be going!!

The book is all about three girls — Carolyn, Joy, and Maya who meet at a photography workshop. They're very different people, and don't think they'll ever get along. Carolyn just moved to NY, and her dad is always worried about her safety. Maya is a New York City girl, and her old friends don't like Joy and Carolyn. And Joy is always sad, with no self-esteem. Yet they find themselves becoming friends anyway.

This is all about how people become friends... it's not like people always like each other right away. It's great to read a book that's so true, and I think you'll definitely like Three Girls in the City as much as we do.

JENNI SAYS:

Like CJ, I really love horses. There's something really special about them. They're smart, beautiful, powerful, but most of all, very gentle animals. I think that's why I like Heartland so much. The books show all of this, with different horses who all have strong personalities of their own.

Heartland is the story of Amy, who lives on this amazing ranch called Heartland. People come from all over to seek advice and help from her and her friend Ty. Together, they help they animals they care so much about, horses. But that's not all — Amy has her own horse, Storm, who is like her best friend. They have this incredible bond and go through so much together. I was surprised to find out how much hard work it is to keep a horse happy and healthy! I really like Amy, though. She's strong, and she does what she has to so her dreams can come true. Who can't understand what that's like? I'm inspired by her — I hope one day I can work on a ranch, just like she does!

When I was little, I saw this old show called Flipper, and I totally got into dolphins. They're really intelligent and beautiful animals, aren't they? When Lesa told us about these books, I could hardly wait to start reading. I know you're going to love them too...

Dolphin Diaries follows the adventures of Jodi McGrath's family as they travel around the world on a yacht to study and meet dolphins. It's like a dream come true, isn't it? Jodi is writing down everything that happens in her diaries, which are filled with stories of amazing people, beautiful places, and some of the most incredible dolphins ever. In book one, you get to meet a dolphin who will become really important to Jodi, named Apollo. It really shows how humans and dolphins can bond, and come together in strange and dangerous situations. I just have to say, reading these books have made me want to go out there and work with dolphins, too... and hopefully, one day I will!

CJ SAYS:

Do you believe in magic? In the world of THE CIRCLE OPENS, magic is everywhere, and the most unexpected people can practice it!

In the first book, we meet Lady Sanderilene Fa, also known as Sandry, who is a powerful magician who discovers the magic of a young boy. She learns she has to train him. but first, she has to find a way to stop a mysterious murderer who is killing local merchants. Can you imagine having to do something like that? Sandry discovers she can't do it alone, and will need the help of her young student. It's not an easy task, but at least they have magic on their side, right?

In the second book, we meet a plant mage named Briar, who discovers a girl named Evvy, a powerful stone magician, who can use her powers to polish and work with stones and gems. Briar wants to protect and teach this girl all he knows, but they get caught up in wars between magical street gangs. It's a tough life for both of them — and they have a lot of decisions to make, most importantly, what they will do with their magic in the future. And I thought my math homework was hard today?!?

In the third book, we meet Daja and Frostpine, two magicians who are off to spend some relaxing time away from the big city. But things are never easy for mages, are they? Apparently not, since as soon as they get there, strange things start to happen — like fires spreading around the usually frozen town. Daja is able to protect the town and people from the flames. but she can't use magic to protect herself from the hurt of discovering who is setting the fires.

These are some of my favorite books ever, I have to say. I can't help but wonder what my life would be like if I had magical powers.

LESA:

Since I've already finished book 1 and have moved on to book 2, CJ asked me to write a little bit about Twitches and why you're going to love it. So, here goes:

Twitches is a story about twin sisters — Cam and Alex — that were separated at birth. One grew up with a rich family on the East Coast, the other in a shack in Montana. While Cam is on vacation in Montana, she runs into Alex who just happens to be working at the amusement park where Cam and her best bud, Beth, are hanging out. This seems like just too much of a coincidence at first until you realize OTHER forces brought them together and this is where the story really begins. In the first book, they realize they are sisters after a tragic event happens to one of them ... then they figure out that they are witches. After reading the first book, I immediately read book 2 ... and I'm totally hooked. Let's just say that finding out they are twin witches (Twitches) is JUST the beginning of their adventures!
