Welcome to Get the Buzz on Honey Bees! This educational program is aligned with national standards in science and geography. Developed by Scholastic and generously sponsored by DreamWorks Animation and the National Honey Board, these materials teach your students critical life-science skills from the fascinating world of bees.
In addition, the Get the Buzz on Honey Bees poster map of the U.S., along with the “Putting Bees on the Map” activities on the student reproducibles, reinforce your students’ geography skills. There’s no sweeter way to bring geography into the classroom! We hope this new program inspires you and your students to learn more about the natural world!
OBJECTIVE
- Students learn what nectar, honey, and pollen are; where they come from; and how bees and flowers share a mutually beneficial relationship
- Students learn the Latin name for the honey bee; about its life stages; and about honey bee anatomy
- Students learn about honey bee society, and the role of the queen bee, the worker bee, and the drone
- Students learn about hive construction and how honey bees dance to communicate
- Students become familiar with a U.S. map and understand basic map elements, such as states and borders, state capitals, regions of the U.S., and how to use a map’s scale—while locating states where honey bee pollination is highest
