New! Lesson 2: Write a Fire-Safety Story
By writing a narrative story about fire safety, grades 3-5 students will learn to have two ways out, practice an escape plan, and go to an outside meeting place and stay there.

1. Review the fire-safety messages on the classroom poster (have two ways out, practice your escape plan, go to your outside meeting place). Hold a class discussion about what to do if students hear the smoke alarm sound when they are at home. Together write out the steps in sequence:
- Go to your first way out.
- If there is smoke or fire, use your second way out.
- Get outside and go to your meeting place—the place everyone in the family knows to go to in case of fire.
- Stay outside at the meeting place and wait for your family.
2. Tell students that it is important to follow the steps of the home fire-escape plan in sequence. Remind them that in narrative writing, the sequence of events is also important. Use the story from Alice in Wonderland as an example. (First, Alice follows the rabbit, next she enters Wonderland, then she goes to the tea party, finally she wakes up at home.) Tell students they will be writing their own fire-safety stories.
3. Distribute copies of Worksheet 2. Each column features one part of a writing prompt. These words can be combined in endless ways to provide inspiration for creative stories. Each of the students should circle one item in each column and use the resulting prompt to write his or her story. Guide students to write narrative events in sequence in their stories.
