Some say the shape of the heart is based on a flower seed. Some say it was based on the shape of the ivy leaf. No matter—the universal symbol for love is the heart. Children will enjoy learning how to say I love you in different languages: http://yunus.hacettepe.edu.tr/~sadi/dizeler/i-love-you.html

OBJECTIVE
Folding paper in half. Cutting in straight lines and curves.

MATERIALS

Scissors, ruler, card stock, colored paper, markers or crayons, embellishments, glue

REPRODUCIBLES
Valentine's Heart Reproducible (PDF)

DIRECTIONS
1)    Begin by making a blank card out of card stock. You can do this by simply folding a piece of paper (8½ x 11 inches) exactly in half.

2)    To create the base for your “pop-up” heart, make two cuts approximately an inch apart.
3)    Open your card to reveal the three-dimensional section.
4)    Use the reproducible to trace onto and cut the heart from colored card stock.
5)    Glue the heart to the pop-up section of your card.

6)    The final step is to glue your new pop-up card to an identical plain card of the same dimensions, hiding the cutwork you did on the back of your pop-up.

7)    Make an envelope for your pop-up card.
