From Campaign 2011: Lesson 2: Fractured Fairy Tales
Students will reinforce writing skills and practice the rules of fire safety by creating a fractured fairy tale.
To practice creative writing skills and review the rules of fire safety.
1. Have students review their fairy tale Venn diagrams from Lesson 1. Tell them that they will use elements from each of the fairy tales in their diagrams to create a fractured fairy tale that is a mash-up of both stories. Their fairy tales will also contain important fire-safety messages.
2. Distribute copies of Student Worksheet 2. Have students use the mapping tool to help them organize the elements they want to include in their fairy tales. Tell students that fractured fairy tales should be funny-they should try to include humorous elements in their stories.
3. Ask students to write their stories on a separate sheet of paper. Remind them that fairy tales often start with the phrase, "Once Upon a Time." If students get stuck, have them reread the original stories for plot elements and brainstorm ways to weave together the stories.
4. Instruct students to trade stories with a partner. Have partners read one another's stories to suggest ideas to make the story clearer or more humorous and look for errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
5. Distribute several copies of Student Worksheet 3 to each student. Have students recopy their final stories onto the pages. They may add illustrations or other embellishments. They should three-hole punch the papers and bind them together into a storybook.
