From Campaign 2011: Lesson 1: The Sound of a Smoke Alarm
Students will learn about fire safety and smoke alarms while practicing emergent writing.
OBJECTIVE
To familiarize students with smoke alarms and how they function.
MATERIALS
A smoke alarm or photo of a smoke alarm (optional), Student Worksheet 1, pencils, crayons
DIRECTIONS
1. If possible, bring a smoke alarm to class. If not, bring a photo. Hold it up and ask children if they have seen one of these in their homes. If there is smoke from a fire, the smoke alarm will make a "Beep! Beep! Beep!" noise. Press the "Test" button to demonstrate. When children hear this sound, they should get outside and stay outside.
2. Distribute copies of Student Worksheet 1. Have children trace the smoke alarm and the words, and color the page.
3. Ask: What sound does the smoke alarm make? (Beep! Beep! Beep!) Ask: What should you do when you hear that sound? (Get outside and stay outside.)
