From Campaign 2010: LESSON 1: PICTURE IT!
Have students use this handy grid to identify all the smoke alarms, batteries, and silly things they find on the poster.
To teach math and visual literacy skills.
1. If possible, bring a smoke alarm and batteries to class. Show the children how to insert the batteries. Press the “Test” button to show that the alarm is working. Tell children that when they hear a smoke alarm sound, they should get outside and stay outside.
2. Hang the Classroom Poster in an easy-to-see location.
3. Distribute copies of Picture It! Tell children that there are hidden smoke alarms,batteries, and silly things in the poster.
4. Search the Poster together to find all of the smoke alarms, batteries, and silly items. Some children may see more than 11 silly items. Have them compare notes with classmates and discuss what is “silly” and what is not, and why they chose certain items.
