USING THE STUDENT PRINTABLES:
Distribute copies of Student Printable 1 (PDF). Ask students to read the article aloud or silently, then answer the comprehension questions together.
Explain that Sparky the Fire Dog® wants to persuade the new president to make fire safety an important part of the new administration.
Distribute copies of Student Printable 2 (PDF). Ask students to write Sparky's speech using the prompts on the reproducible.
WRAP-UP:
Have each student read his or her speech aloud. Then hold an election to decide which speech was the most persuasive. Students can't vote for their own speech.
