Election 2012: Setting the Field
With more than a year to go before Election Day, Republican candidates lined up to compete or their party's nomination to challenge President Barack Obama. The initial lineup included Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul, Jon Huntsman, Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Pawlenty and Cain dropped out of the race early, but the field was still crowded heading into the first primaries. As 2011 became 2012, all eyes were on the Iowa caucuses, the first major test in the presidential nomination process.
