Lessons for Grades 7-8
Welcome to LIVESTRONG at School™! Created by Scholastic and the LIVESTRONG Foundation, the LIVESTRONG at School program uses national standards-based lessons to teach your students about the realities of cancer. While it is a difficult subject to talk about with kids, the LIVESTRONG Foundation believes that it is important for students to understand what cancer is and how it can be treated. In addition, this program informs your students about ways that they can make a difference and help those with cancer. The lessons and printable worksheets below make it easy for you to share this valuable information with your class.
LESSON 1: Giving Support
Begin with a discussion of what cancer is. Through an online video and an accompanying worksheet, this lesson allows students to become familiar with the fundamentals of supporting a person who is living with cancer.
LESSON 2: Being an Inspiration
Use a cancer advocates real-life account to illustrate how courage, persistence, and optimism are primary forces in the fight against the disease.
LESSON 3: The Fight Against Cancer
Engage your students in an informative dialogue about the global reach and costs (physical and economic) of cancer. This lesson also details the presence and critical importance of the fight against this disease.
LESSON 4: Risk and Prevention
Connect the choices made in your students daily lives with the small steps they can take to reduce their risk of getting cancer. Underscore that there is more to risk prevention than just avoiding negative behaviors.
