Grades K-2: Our Heroes

Heroes can be powerful role models that help students develop personal values, build self-identity and create goals. In this lesson, students will learn about successful Asian Americans whose accomplishments all students can appreciate. Students will brainstorm what it means to be a hero, discuss the people they admire, and think about the kind of person they would like to be. By sharing their hero stories with the class, students can improve upon their verbal and presentation skills, making this curriculum valuable in a variety of ways.

Grades 3-5: Making Connections Using Maps

The United States is a nation of immigrants with many stories about journeys to America. Asian Americans journeyed from more than 50 Asian countries and, therefore, are a very diverse group. In this lesson, students map and learn about Asian countries and create a country quiz. Family history research helps students connect families and classmates to Asia and other parts of the world. Students connect their family birthplaces on a world map and see the web of journeys that brought students to their classroom.

Grades 6-8: Heroes All Around Us

Heroes can be powerful role models that help students develop personal values, build self-identity and create goals. In this lesson, students will learn about successful Asian Americans whose accomplishments all students can appreciate. Students will write a short biography of a hero they admire, which will encourage better research and writing skills. They will brainstorm what it means to be a hero, discuss the heroes in their own lives, and examine how these people influence the goals each student has.
