BIG AL by Andrew Clements: Reading Response Road Map

Take a navigated journey through a picture book! Use this reading response map as your guide through Andrew Clements' BIG AL.

In this story, Big Al, a big-hearted fish who is as loveable as he is scary-looking, swims in the deep-blue sea. Big Al swims alone—nothing but him and the seaweed. Of course he would rather swim with the others, but his size, his great big fish eyes, and his mouthful of sharp teeth frighten away any fish that sees him. This book aligns with Guided Reading Level L, and introduces such topics as individuality, kindness and charity, and friends and friendship.

On the reading response map, prompts in text boxes, along with art cues, guide students’ comprehension about the story they are reading. The prompts help students to build comprehension skills, such as:

    • recalling events
    • describing characters
    • predicting outcomes
    • exploring cause-and-effect relationships
    • making personal connections,
    • and more!

About This Book

Fifth grader Nick Allen knows just how to make school more cool . In third grade, he transformed Miss Deaver's room into a tropical paradise with some paper palm trees and a sandy beach. In fourth grade, he taught his classmates to mimic the high-pitched calls of blackbirds.

But now, in fifth grade, he's come up with his most ingenious idea yet. After learning about the origins of words, he decides to change the word pen to frindle . At first, it seems like a harmless prank, a way to annoy his dictionary-obsessed teacher. Then the whole class starts using the new word, and the joke spreads across town like wildfire. Suddenly Nick finds himself in the middle of a media frenzy over frindle. Will Nick emerge from the controversy a troublemaker or a hero?
