The One and Only Katharine Applegate

Author talks about her Newbery Award-winning book

The One and Only Ivan isn't the first book Katharine Applegate has written. But it is the one everyone's reading right now. In January, the book won the 2013 Newbery Medal!

The book tells the story of Ivan, a gorilla living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. He's used to living with humans and thinks about the things people do, like what's on TV, art, and how to deal with change. It sounds like a fantastic tale, but it's best on a true story. The real Ivan was taken from Africa and raised in a human household before being moved to a circus-themed mall in Washington state. He lived in a cage in that mall for 27 years, but was eventually moved to Zoo Atlanta in 1994.

Kid Reporter Alexandra Pritchard learned more about the real Ivan and how he inspired The One and Only Ivan during her recent interview with Applegate. They talked over Skype about the book, Ivan, and her career as a writer.
