Five Primaries, Five Wins

Mitt Romney looks sure to be the Republican nominee against President Obama in November

By William Russell | April 25 , 2012

Voters in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island cast their votes yesterday in each state’s Republican presidential primary. And in all five states, Mitt Romney won big.

After Rick Santorum dropped out of the race, Romney was left with little competition for the Republican presidential nomination. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are still in the race, but they trail far behind Romney in the number of awarded delegates.

According to the Associated Press, Romney won 154 delegates in last night’s elections. Gingrich and Paul won five delegates combined.

Romney now has 844 delegates, 300 away from the 1,144 he needs to be the Republican nominee. But with Santorum now out of the race, Romney has a clear road to the nomination.

At his victory party in Manchester, New Hampshire, Romney had his eye on the general-election battle with President Barack Obama.

“Tonight is the start of a new campaign to unite every American who knows in their heart that we can do better,” Romney said. “The last few years have been the best that Barack Obama can do, but it’s not the best America can do!”

“A better America begins tonight,” he added.

For Romney, his general-election campaign began last night. And as he looks toward selecting a running mate and battling President Obama, the other Republican nominees are reassessing their campaigns.

Last night, Gingrich was in Concord, North Carolina. In a speech to his supporters, he recommitted himself to seeing his campaign through to the Republican National Convention. But after Romney’s big wins in all five primary states, Gingrich changed positions and said he will look at the future of his campaign over the next few days.

The next primary elections will be held on May 8 in Indiana, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
