Living with Liberty
David Luchsinger oversees Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty
We all know that Lady Liberty lives on Liberty Island, but she's not the island's only resident.
David Luchsinger is superintendent of Ellis Island National Park, Liberty Island National Park, and the Statue of Liberty. He oversees the two islands but also lives on Liberty Island himself. Scholastic Kid Reporter Fred Hechinger recently caught up with Luchsinger in his office during Scholastic's Virtual Field Trip to Ellis Island.
Luchsinger has been with the National Parks Service for more than three decades. His previous post was as superintendent of New Orleans' Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, where he oversaw the park's restoration after Hurricane Katrina.
More than three million people visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island each year, and Luchsinger believes that through their visits people can learn not only about our country's history as a nation of immigrants but also about immigration issues in present day America.
