Phone earbuds, city traffic, hair dryers, music concerts…everyday noises influence your students' hearing in ways that you may not have considered. Scholastic and the Starkey Hearing Foundation have partnered to create the Listen Carefully teaching materials. Begin teaching your students about the science of hearing today, and encourage them to perform experiments to put these lessons into practice.
Lesson 1: Follow the Sounds
Use this lesson (and its listening experiment) to explore with your students the sounds around them and the origin of those sounds.
Lesson 2: Inside the Ear
Use this lesson to help your students understand the parts of the ear that work together to process sound.
Lesson 3: Safe and Sound
Work with your students so that they understand the importance of protecting their sense of hearing. Use this lesson’s listening experiment as a hands-on application of how critical hearing protection is.
Lesson 4: Listen and Learn
Discuss the sound device onomatopoeia with your students in order to help them identify sound effects in poetry.
Prepare your grades 7–12 students to enter the Listen Carefully video contest with this PSA storyboarding lesson.
