Common Core Spotlight

Totally Fun Nonfiction
+ Dreadful Mistakes =

An editing activity to boost your students’ “Core” writing skills
In this issue’s Lazy Editor, we present your students with a short nonfiction piece on the delightfully disgusting topic of medical maggots. Your students’ job is to find and correct grammar, punctuation, and usage errors in the article—building the skills they need to meet Common Core Standards in the categories of “Conventions of Standard English” and “Production of Writing.” If students need extra practice with any of the skills covered, simply download our reinforcement worksheet(s) below.

Your students will:
• edit a nonfiction text for five types of errors, including grammar, punctuation, and usage
• complete any or all of our reinforcement activities: Conquer Verb-Tense Consistency, Concerning Commas, Active vs. Passive Voice, Dealing With Dashes, and Puzzling Pronouns

Common Core ELA Anchor Standards for grades 6-12 this activity supports:

R1, W4, W5, L1, L2
