Mini-Lesson 2: Sharing With Others

Objectives:
Students will understand:

  • Why people might choose to share money with others
  • How to identify organizations and causes for donations
  • Different ways students can help organizations besides giving money

Materials:

Click for whiteboard-ready printables.

DIRECTIONS:
Time Required: 10 minutes

1. Ask students why we share money with others. How does sharing make us feel? What are the benefits to us and to the recipients?

2. Talk about choosing an organization to give to. Why is it important to research the organization first? Discuss ways students can find out about an organization's mission, goals, and history, such as researching the organization online and talking with other people who support it.

3. Have students complete the "Sharing With Others" printable. Discuss students' responses to the activity and their ideas for helping their friends, family, and community. Use these bonus printables to help students further develop their money smarts.

These activities can be used as in-class lesson activities or out-of-the-classroom extensions.

Extension:
Have students discuss ways they can work with their families to become superheroes of sharing in their community. Then invite them to enter WordGirl's Power-Packed Sharing Challenge. Visit scholastic.com/wordgirlsharingchallenge for contest details.
