Breaking Barriers: 2014 Winners
Major League Baseball and Scholastic would like to thank everyone who participated in Breaking Barriers. This year nearly 19,000 students entered the contest—the most ever for Breaking Barriers!
While it is impossible to individually acknowledge everyone, we would like to commend these student writers. Their essays described their perseverance in overcoming barriers using the values demonstrated by Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball’s color barrier.
We were moved to read so many stories of courage, determination, teamwork, excellence, persistence, justice, integrity, commitment, and citizenship from so many walks of life. “The number of essays we received this year is phenomenal—they were uplifting and truly inspiring,” said Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson. “I am honored that the values my father used to break the color barrier have played such a large role in helping so many young people break through their own barriers.”
