Essential question:
How can details of ordinary life help us comprehend a horrific tragedy?

Summary:
Through a poem, a nonfiction account, two photographs, and a video clip, students will learn about the horror of the Holocaust by looking at details of the victims’ everyday lives.

Main objectives:
• to gain knowledge of the events of the Holocaust through different genres
• to identify details that help convey a tragedy through stories of individual people
• to participate in class discussion
• to write a reflective essay

Materials:
• the April 18, 2011, issue of Scope

• digital version of “Fighting Hitler”
• digital version of “The Shoes of the Dead”
