One-Room School House 2011

Computers bring the world to secluded school

By Grace McManus | null null , null

The Duckwater School in Nye County, Nevada, teaches the old-fashioned way. A handful students from a variety of grades work with a single teacher and her assistant in a one-room school house, some 140 miles away from the next school. Duckwater is 70 miles from the closest town.

Computers on every desktop connect the students to the world.

"We have a good level of technology, which has been really key for our rural setting," said teacher Lyn Huston. "Some students take violin lessons, for example, via a virtual studio with a teacher who actually lives in Iowa. We use Skype to do that."

Huston and her class recently spoke via Skype with Scholastic News Kid Reporter Grace McManus, a student in the New York City School District. From the largest school district to the smallest, Grace spoke to students in all grades about what it's like to attend a one-room school.
