Snowboarder Kevin Pearce Recovers

Olympic hopeful now a commentator for ESPN

By Alexis Wiseman | null null , null

Scholastic News Kid Reporter Alexis Wiseman recently spoke to professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce about his recovery from extensive brain injuries. He was injured while training for the 2010 Winter X Games and 2010 Vancouver Olympics in December 2009.

Joining the interview with Kevin was his brother, David, a gold medal Special Olympic skier. Kevin said support from his family helped keep him alive and optimistic throughout his continuing ordeal.

While he had hoped to be back on the snowboard this season, doctors said he must wait another year. Recently, however, he got his driver's license back — a terrific sign of recovery from someone who couldn't speak or walk a year ago.

Kevin is also back on the surfboard, another of his athletic passions. Doctors approved surfing as long as he wears a helmet. He plays tennis and golf as well. What he doesn't like to do is bowl — at least against his brother, David, who has Down syndrome.

"The other day, he got six strikes!" Pearce said. "He's unbeatable."

Although he can't be on the snowboard pipes just yet, Kevin is not out of the sport altogether. He served as a TV commentator for ESPN for the recent X Games in Colorado.
