The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Learning to fight evil the magical way!

By Mariam El Hasan | July 12 , 2010

What would you do if a stranger approached you and told you that you were a descendent of Merlin the wizard and that you are destined to be a powerful sorcerer some day? Well, you probably should not be talking to strangers, which is exactly what 10-year-old Dave Stutler thought the first time he saw Balthazar Blake in the sci-fi, action/adventure movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice, by Walt Disney Pictures.

Balthazar tells him that he has potential to possess great magical abilities. Dave undergoes years of therapy to recover!

Just when he begins to feel normal again, Dave, played Jay Baruchel, is again approached by the same man, played by Nicolas Cage. Balthazar is determined to convince Dave that he is the only person who can save the world from the evil and powerful sorcerer Morgana. Balthazar's job is to teach Dave how to acquire his magical abilities so he can fight Morgana (who is a real psycho!).

Although Dave is not convinced he should participate in Balthazar's plan, he reluctantly agrees. Along the way they encounter a variety of magical experiences, some of them very frightening. While on their journey, Balthazar and Dave must overcome many difficult, supernatural challenges.

Also while on his adventure, Dave comes across the girl of his dreams, Becky Barnes (Teresa Palmer). He has been crushing on her since he was 10 and first traumatized by his new mentor. His attraction to her clashes with his sorcery training and his sorcery mission interferes with his goal to win her affection.

Speaking of challenges, Director Jon Turtletaub said he faced quite a few himself while making The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

"The amount of special effects made it very difficult," he told the Scholastic Kids Press Corps. "The actors had to be pretending to be chased by a giant dragon or a scary monster without actually being chased."

Those extremely frightening creatures were added later by computer.

Will Dave defeat the villainous Morgana? Does he get to be with Becky Barnes, the girl of his dreams? To find out, you'll have to see the movie for yourself, which opens Wednesday, July 14, in theaters nationwide!

Check out a movie trailer at The Sorcerer's Apprentice website.
