Interactive whiteboard tips for this issue:
  • To engage students, have volunteers click the bottom right corner to "turn the page." Use the heart page-counters to review the page numbers.

  • Use the shape tool to make personal connections. Volunteers can come up and make a star next to the photos that show things they do in their own families.

  • Make the page-4 activity interactive, and then do it over and over. Have children take turns using the pen or a finger to find and circle the letters. Then let a volunteer use the eraser tool to clear the page. Do the activity again.

Interactive whiteboard tips for this issue:
  • Help children make predictions and get them excited to read about the topic by using the spotlight tool. Prior to the lesson, spotlight the Clifford illustration on the cover. Ask children to look at the seagull and the inner tube and predict where Clifford might be. Turn off the spotlight to reveal the photo and see if their predictions were correct.

  • Use the voice recorder to build phonological awareness. Record children reading each tongue-twister caption. Then play back their voices while the class listens for the s sound.

  • Practice letter recognition on pages 2-3 of the issue. Students can take turns using the highlighter tool to mark all the letter s's they find.

  • Use your pen to build number recognition. How many arms does the starfish in the picture have? Count aloud together and number the arms directly on the photo.
