Reading Is Fundamental: Scholastic Summer Challenge Champion
Did you know that two-thirds of low-income children in the U.S. have no books in their homes?
This summer, kids are helping other kids in need — just by reading! On behalf of all the readers participating in the Summer Challenge, Scholastic will make a donation of 50,000 books to kids in need through Reading Is Fundamental, a children's literacy nonprofit.
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.
Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provided 4.4 million children with 15 million new, free books and literacy resources last year.
All RIF programs combine three essential elements to foster children's literacy: reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement of choosing free books to keep.
RIF's accomplishments are due in part to the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and thousands of individuals.
RIF and Scholastic have joined to help improve the lives of children who have limited access to books by raising funds to get books into the hands of children that are most at risk for academic failure. The Scholastic Give to RIF program will launch on May 3rd, 2010. 100% of your donation will help RIF put books in the hands of children who need them the most. Your donation will help ensure that despite the odds, all children have the chance to experience the joy of reading and have books to call their own.
