MAY/JUNE TEACHER’S GUIDE

"SUMMER NIGHT BUGS"

Digital Issue
Printable Activity: "Our Flag"
EXTRA Printable Activity: "Where Is the Bug?"

Tips for using this issue with a whiteboard:

  • Get your issue ready before children come into the classroom. Project the cover onto your whiteboard, and use the spotlight tool to reveal a small portion of the photo that includes a few fireflies.

  • When children enter the room, have them sit in front of the whiteboard and try to guess what the mystery picture is. Then reveal the whole cover! Did anybody guess what was in the picture?

  • Next, have a volunteer come up and click the bottom right corner to "turn the page."

  • Use pages 2-3 of the digital issue to track text together. Review the Read-Along text with children (come out at night). On the whiteboard, highlight each word as you read it aloud, and encourage children to "read" along with you.

  • Display the activity on page 4. Together, count the legs on each critter. Let children circle the creatures that are insects and cross out the ones that are not.

"HAVE A TAIL-WAGGING TIME THIS SUMMER!"

Digital Issue
Printable Activity: "What Keeps Us Safe in the Summer?"
EXTRA Printable Activity: "S Is for Sun"

Tips for using this issue with a whiteboard:

  • Have children practice following directions as they use the shape tool. For example, have a volunteer come up to the board and put a star next to the dog wearing sunglasses, a square next to the dog drinking water, and a triangle next to the dog wearing a life jacket.

"OH, IT'S AN OTTER!"

Digital Issue
EXTRA Printable Activity: "Ocean Animals All Mixed Up"

Tips for using this issue with a whiteboard:

  • Get the issue ready before children come into the classroom. Project the cover onto your whiteboard, and use the spotlight tool to reveal a small portion of the otter.

  • When children enter the room, have them sit in front of the whiteboard and try to guess what the mystery picture is. Give them clues, such as it is an animal; it lives in the ocean; it has fur; it swims and plays. Make the spotlight bigger and bigger with each clue until you have revealed the mystery animal.

  • On pages 2-3 have children volunteer to come and underline the letter o each time they see it.

"BUTTERFLY IN THE GARDEN"

Digital Issue
EXTRA Printable Activity: "My Butterfly Puzzle"

Tips for using this issue with a whiteboard:

  • Project this Rebus Reader on your whiteboard and you have an instant Big Issue. Use it to model for children how to track print as they follow along in their own student issues. (For fun, you can have volunteers come up to the whiteboard and click the bottom right corner to turn each page.)

  • After you have read the book several times, have volunteers come up to the board and underline these sight words on each page: it, by, the, not, did.
