Book Review: The 39 Clues Book Seven: The Viper's Nest

New release reveals Dan and Amy's branch

February 18 , 2010

Book: The 39 Clues Book Seven: The Viper's Nest
Author:  Peter Lerangis
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Publication Date: February 2, 2010
Ages: 8-12

This is the book that The 39 Clues fans have been waiting for—the book that will reveal Dan and Amy's family branch! This adventure will help Dan and Amy realize who they are.

The Viper's Nest is the seventh book of The 39 Clues series. It is written by Peter Lerangis, who is also the author of the third book in the series. The cover features a snake looking like it means business and when you begin to turn the pages, you realize that it actually does!

Book Six, written by Jude Watson, leaves you in a black hole of suspense. The Cahills were forced to run from a burning house with Alistair Oh, a fellow competitor for the clues.  The Cahills are left with a lot to think about. They have discovered that the person who killed their parents, burned their house down with no mercy, and robbed them of a wonderful childhood was Isabel Kabra. The other Lucian competitor, Irina Spasky—someone they thought was an enemy—had actually sacrificed her life for Amy, Dan, and Alistair.

Book Seven opens in Indonesia where Amy and Dan are on the run from the Indonesian police. Isabel has framed them for the burning of the building and the death of Irina. During the escape they reunite with their au pair Nellie Gomez.

While rummaging through Irina's stuff, Amy finds the answer that will lead them to the next country, and one step closer to the secret that will make them the most powerful of humans.

With help from Alistair and Nellie, they crack the clue to their next destination—South Africa.  Unfortunately, the police catch up to them and they are caught. Luckily, the police let the Cahills, Nellie, and Saladin go, but they take Alistair.

After arriving in South Africa, the group finds a mysterious man giving away postcards. What do they not know is that this postcard plays a big part in finding the next clue.

In their search for the clue, they forget one big rule of being a Cahill—never let your guard down. Soon enough, they are in a high-speed car chase with their lives on the line.

This is a very fast-paced book, sometimes requiring you to go back and reread to keep it all straight. I would have liked to see some new characters and more details on the important parts of this story, but the comedy and the action kept me engrossed in the book from page one.

Fans of The 39 Clues series will love The Viper's Nest as it contains lots of action, comedy, and thrilling situations.  It also reveals an important secret. What else does a good book need?
