Disneynature’s new film, earth, takes viewers through a year of what it is like to be an animal living on this planet. It’s a great movie for nature-lovers and is opening on Earth Day, April 22, 2009.

The movie vividly depicts the struggles faced by three animal families in the course of their daily lives. Actor James Earl Jones narrates. Named as the cast are polar bears, African elephants, and humpback whales.

In the Artic, a father polar bear desperately searches for food to feed his family before the ice begins to melt and break apart. Once that happens, he will no longer be able to cross the ice patches in search of seals.

In the desert, an elephant herd travels hundreds of miles across arid land in search of water. They are traveling to a place just as dry as the desert, but that should be a flowing stream by the time they get there.

In the oceans, mother whales nurse their young in warm tropic waters where their babies will be safe from predators. Because there is no food for the mothers there, they must travel thousands of miles to feeding grounds in the Antarctic before summer ends and the food is gone.

All along the way the polar bears, elephants, and whales must guard against predators while struggling to find enough food and water to survive.

The film is the first in a new series of feature-length documentaries by Disney’s new production company, Disneynature.

"Earth captures some of the rarest and most beautiful imagery of the planet ever photographed,” said Martyn Freeman, a spokesman for producer BBC Worldwide. Greenlight Media is also a producer.

Disney’s earth shows that it is much harder to be an animal than many people think. The movie is rated G for general audience. To see clips from the film, and learn more about the filmmakers, visit the earth Web site.
