Summer Project 2002

Book Proposal for Read and Rise by Sandra Pinkney

Fellows:
Lauren Causey • Donnell Kelly • Donald Washington, Jr. • Dwight Nathaniel Webster • Robert Young

Project Contributors:
Grace Maccarone • Sonia Black

Working as a team under the direction of Scholastic senior editor Grace Maccarone, the Fellows developed a proposal for a children’s book targeted toward the African American market. The proposal outlined the premise, target audience, specs, potential authors and illustrators, and included a profit-and-loss statement. Ken Geist, Vice President and Editorial Director for Cartwheel and Orchard Books, reviewed the proposal in August.

The Fellows presented and defended their proposal, and responded to Ken’s feedback on their concept and presentation. The quality of the proposal and presentation reflected the training and mentoring that the Fellows received that summer. Not only was the book proposal approved, but several others product ideas were generated as a result of this exercise. Read and Rise by Sandra Pinkney was published in 2006.
