Time to Shape Up

The battle of the bulge is now being fought on school turfs nationwide.  In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger challenged 20,000 students to be active for 30 to 60 minutes several times a week—rewarding the school with the most participants with a new fitness center. In several other states, most recently in Pennsylvania, grade schools are required to record students’ body mass index and send what are being called “obesity report cards” home to parents. Although the strategies on how to get kids to kick high-calorie snacks vary, the fact that youth fitness is at the forefront of education is reason enough to jump for joy.

Building Language for Literacy is a research-based program that develops children's oral language and early literacy skills. Independent research shows that this program significantly increases vocabulary, language, and letter and word identification skills for English- and Spanish-speaking children!

The unique structure for Building Language for Literacy centers around "Places" in the community benefiting both teachers and children.

    This program:

    • Fits into teachers' existing curriculum
    • Builds on children's prior experiences
    • Fosters multi-cultural awareness and understandings
    • Connects school to home and encourages parent involvement
Choose the units that match your current topics and themes - or those that are children's favorite places to visit!

The Spanish Theme Add-On packs are collections of books in Spanish related to the concepts discussed in each corresponding Place Unit. Used in conjunction with the Place Units, the Spanish Theme Add-On packs build new and reinforce existing vocabulary as well as deepen comprehension. They also can be a great addition to your classroom lending library enabling families where Spanish is spoken to discuss topics learned in the classroom at home.
