Can I use the Book Wizard Mobile app at retail book stores?
Yes, you can certainly use the Book Wizard Mobile app at book stores. However, please keep in mind that while the app utilizes a database of more than 50,000 different children’s books, it may not include all editions of those books available in the retail market place. The app is intended for school use and scanning for book levels in a retail environment might not yield the best results.
How do I scan a book?
To scan a book, tap the scanner icon at the bottom of the app and then align the red bar with the book's bar code. For best results, hold your device about 4 to 6 inches from the bar code and watch for heavy glare on the book, because that can interfere with the scanning. Once the bar code has been scanned, information about the book will come up in the app.
I got an error when I scanned a book. Now what?
When you scan a book's bar code, the app searches the Book Wizard database of more than 50,000 books for that particular edition of the title. If that title is not in the database or there was a problem with the scan, you may receive an error message. It is also possible that the title is in the database, just not the particular edition you scanned.
In this case, tap “Search” and type the title or say the title using your mobile device’s speech recognition function.
Does Book Wizard Mobile use a laser?
No. The Book Wizard Mobile app uses your device's optics to read the bar code of a book. It does not emit a laser.
How do I search for books in Book Wizard Mobile?
In addition to finding books by using Book Wizard Mobile's bar code scanner, you can also use the search feature to find books by title, author, or keyword. Simply tap the search icon at the bottom left corner of the app and type a search term. Or, tap the microphone icon on your device’s keypad and say the search term. (Make sure your device’s speech recognition function is turned on.) The app will present you with a list of results based on that term.
The book I searched for isn't available. Now what?
The Book Wizard has information about more than 50,000 books in its database, and we're adding books every day. If you don't find a title, it may be because that book hasn't been added yet. Please check back again later!

The Grade Level Equivalent reading level describes the readability of the text by grade. It indicates that a student in that grade who is reading at grade level would be able to read the book independently. What does Lexile® Measure mean?
The Lexile Framework is a numeric scale from the company MetaMetrics that is used to help match reader ability and text difficulty. It is based on an algorithm that simultaneously measures vocabulary and sentence length. The Lexile Framework evaluates prose only. Poems, plays, and songs do not have Lexile Measures.
The Lexile framework is aligned to many, but not all, standardized state assessments. Schools that actively use the Lexile framework often use formative assessments such as the Scholastic Reading Inventory. Formative tests you give to measure progress as you teach new material. The test results help you amplify your teaching, re-teach, and provide additional practice to solidify concepts and skills.
What does Guided Reading mean?
Developed by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, the Guided Reading level system is a detailed, alphabetic system that has several levels within each grade level. For example, grade 2 is equivalent to Guided Reading levels J through M. These multiple levels allow you to tailor your reading program more accurately to a range of reading abilities.
Each book is carefully evaluated prior to being leveled, and teacher input is taken into consideration in the leveling process.
What does DRA mean?
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is a reading assessment tool intended to identify the independent reading level for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. With the DRA numerical scale, you can measure reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Once you know the student's DRA score, you can match that score with books in the appropriate level.
