A Unique Family Engagement Solution Patricia Crain de Galarce, Principal E.W. Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School ![]() The event kicked-off with a Scholastic Book Fair, followed by a research-based Family Fun Time workshop where families learned how to help their children become strong readers and learners. Afterward, families created their own books together during a build-a-book make-and-take activity. Plus, every student received a $5.00 Reading Certificate to pick out their own book at the Fair thanks to Title 1 funding and the generosity of local business sponsors. "Families got information and there was a hands-on component. There was some modeling done. There was a take-away. There was excitement, and it ended with the Book Fair, where everyone got to walk away with books," said Principal Patricia Crain de Galarce. "It was an event that had the capacity to cut across income levels," adds Eleanore Simms, Parent Coordinator. "It got parents and kids excited about reading. And it got them excited about doing it together." Download this flyer to learn more about Read and Rise.
