Books to Beat the Holiday

Author Jordan Sonnenblick chats with Shepherd Jr. High students.Contest Winners Meet Author Jordan Sonnenblick

Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore, or so it would appear from the scene at Shepherd Junior High School in Mesa, Arizona. The school, which won the grand prize in Scholastic Book Fairs' National Student Crew Contest, used a winterized “Wizard of Oz” theme to build excitement for its Fair, where shoppers were greeted by the Wizard of Books, Dorothy, the Wicked Witch, and a cowardly white tiger.

The middle-schoolers won the semi-annual competition for putting on the top student-run Book Fair in the nation. Student Crew volunteers created contests, designed book displays, and planned and hosted activities, all for the purpose of motivating fellow tweens to read.

The fruit of the Crew’s labors was a $2,000 Scholastic Book Fairs shopping spree and a visit from Jordan Sonnenblick, award-winning author of Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie and Notes from the Midnight Driver. Visit our Web site to learn about our next contest.
