Summer is the perfect time to enjoy reading. The benefits kids gain from reading over the summer can endure for years to come. However, kids don’t always make the connection. The Scholastic Kids and Family Reading Report™ reveals that interest in reading drops significantly after age eight. The number one reason kids cite for not reading more? They can’t find books they like to read.

This is where Scholastic can help! Our Summer Reading Buzz Web site offers resources for librarians, teachers, and parents, plus a safe online community for kids, where they can share book recommendations, chat with fellow booklovers, and create eCard book reviews and other activities that are sure to get kids buzzing about books.

We've added a great new feature to the
Chairperson's Toolkit – a Book Fair Homepage Builder. In just four easy steps, you can:

• Post your Fair dates and times
• Customize a welcome message
• Preview featured books
• Share your Book Fair goal
• Recruit volunteers

Other additions to the Toolkit include enhanced Fair Files. Now you can view thumbnail pictures
of each file, descriptions, and corresponding page numbers from the Idea Exchange Handbook. Visit the Toolkit to preview these great features.

This past fall, librarian Melanie Callahan and her Student Crew created a WILD Book Fair, complete with a jungle of books, a grass hut, safari gear, book commercials, and more to “lure” and “capture” the interest of students, faculty, and parents. As a result of their efforts, the Crew won a finalist prize in the Book Fairs National Student Crew contest.

"Our Book Fair was held the second week of school during my first year as a new librarian. I had just started my job and knew I was going to need help, so I enlisted the help of a Student Crew, and have used one ever since. It’s so much more fun when students get involved."

"This fall, my amazing Crew of 21 student volunteers came up with some very cool contest ideas that generated a lot of excitement among their fellow students."

Keep reading for more ideas and tips from Melanie and her Crew.
