Unique Family Engagement Program Draws Families Back to School

Klutz Build-a-Book helps bring families back to school.
Looking for a way to increase family involvement? As you well know, family involvement helps students achieve more and schools thrive. Scholastic has the perfect family engagement solution – Klutz Build-a-Book®, a make-and-take activity that empowers students and their families to embrace literacy in a unique way.

"This low-cost, easy-to-run program is a great way to reinforce language and literacy skills, while providing a powerful home-school connection," says educational consultant Marsha Thauwald, a former principal and assistant superintendent in China Spring, Texas.

This activity can be hosted during the Book Fair or as a stand-alone program. Using assorted foam shapes, googly eyes, a blank wire-o bound book and other craft materials, families work together to create their own original book (and a memory) they'll keep forever.

"Klutz Build-a-Book aligns perfectly with Title 1 funding goals for family involvement," says Dillon Kalkhurst, Director of Specialty Programs for Book Fairs. "Many schools host the build-a-book activity during their Fair because it draws even more families to their event...they really see a boost in traffic at the Fair."

"The build-a-book program brought parents in and got them involved," says Jean Merz, English Teacher at MLK Jr. Elementary School in Houston. "We can do a million literacy activities in our classroom, but this got them involved on the floor with their child completing this activity."
