 Encouraging children to read over the summer months should be fun! Donalyn Miller and Principal Alyson Beecher team up to provide a list of great summer reads in every genre for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Scholastic Book Fairs-NAESP Foundation Alliance Results in Powerful New Advocate for Principals

On March 24, Scholastic Book Fairs and the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation (NAESPF) - two organizations that share a passion and commitment to educators and students alike - forged a partnership that will benefit principals and the schools they serve.
The partnership was announced at the NAESP 2012 Annual Conference: Best Practices for Better Schools convention in Seattle. Scholastic Book Fairs President Alan Boyko celebrated the common ground that both organizations share. "We found that we have a lot of the same goals. It's about the success of children," Alan shared.

 Scholastic Book Fairs and NAESP Foundation kicked off their partnership by donating 250 books to Hawthorne Elementary, a Title 1 school in Seattle. Award-winners Myers, Pinkney to Headline Summits

Walter Dean Myers and Andrea Davis Pinkney - both award-winning authors of books for children and young adults - have joined the roster of keynote speakers at the Scholastic Book Fairs Reading Summits for Educational Leaders.
Participants at the annual summits, which will be held in seven locations across the country, will receive continuing professional educational credits. The $99 cost also includes professional development breakout sessions, lunch, parking, and a gift bag of books. Fellow staff members can attend for just $49.

One Million Students Homeless

 In 2009-10, there were nearly a million homeless students in U.S. public schools. That's a 38 percent increase from 2006-07 and is likely an undercount, reports Barbara Duffield, policy director for the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) in Washington, D.C.
With collaboration and smart strategies, some districts are cracking the code and finding ways to help their homeless students. Advocates maintain there are ways to accommodate this vulnerable population. But first educators must learn how to best approach, and deal with, the challenges involved.
