An October Reading Fest
Reading Fest

This month we celebrate reading by sharing the accomplishments of our 2013 Scholastic Summer Challenge™ participants, who logged a record 176,438,473 reading minutes! Now, that's worth celebrating - especially as educators look ahead to standardized testing season.

Did you know independent reading is a critical component in preparing for standardized testing? As Education Consultant Barbara Masley puts it, "Reading practice creates more neural pathways, resulting in better decoders. Through that reading practice, we can teach students comprehension strategies. But we have to interest them in reading both inside and outside school, and we have to help parents connect to why kids should be reading at home."

So why let the excitement of summer reading season wane? Here are some ways to maintain the momentum year-round:

  1. Celebrate reading year-round by signing up your students for READ 100,000, and track minutes using the free Scholastic Reading Timer app.
  2. Schedule a Rev Up Reading Book Fair to keep students excited about books they want to read. Talk to your Book Fair Consultant today!
  3. Share how your school celebrates reading year-round!

Students Nearly Double Reading World Record in 2013 Scholastic Summer Challenge™
Forge Families

Kids representing all 50 U.S. states and 30 countries read and logged 176,438,473 minutes as part of the 2013 Scholastic Summer Challenge™, a free program designed to keep students reading throughout the summer months. Some of the remarkable results: Nonreaders became readers, and a rural school with only 96 students managed to rank in the Top 20.
