Scholastic Student Exchange Activities & Themes
Special Events & Activities Draw More Shoppers
Offer people an extra reason to visit your Book Fair. Special events and activities done't have to be elaborate or labor-intensive. The simplest events can coincide with activities aleady scheduled at school, such as parent-teacher conferences.
In developing a special event, just keep in mind that everyone enjoys being entertained, catered to, and given the opportunity to win prizes.
Here are a few events that have worked for other schools:
- Doughnuts for Dads or Muffins for Moms
- Grand Lunch for Grandparents
- Be a Book Character Day
- "Buy the Book" Café
- "Thanks-A-Latte" Café
- Bad Hair Day
- Book Fiesta Night
- Night of Creative Expressions
- Open Mic Talent Night
These special activities are also proven winners:
- Free Gummy Book Worms Offer a free gummy worm with every purchase of a book.
- Free Spins Create a spinning wheel and offer a free spin for prizes with purchases of $5 or more.
- Free Caricatures Offer a free caricature or silhouette drawing with purchases of ten dollars or more.
Themes Inspire Décor, Activities, & Enthusiasm
Freshen your Book Fair each season by working with a theme. If students choose the theme themselves, you'll avoid ideas that are uncool or not appropriate. Your student volunteers will help select and execute themes that reflect the lifestyle and interests of students.
Here are some themes contributed by schools:
- Beep Bop "N" Books Break out the poodle skirts, neck scarves, and hair grease...relive the '50s!
- Boards, Bikes, Blades, and Books Ramp it up...mimic a skate park, conduct a skateboard deck design contest and use them to decorate.
- Come to the Fair! Waffle cakes and western wear...if the county fair is big in your area, have some blue-ribbon fun.
- Operation: Troop Tales Rally your community around those who have served our country and those who still are.
- Sweet Moves, Sweet Rides, Sweet Reads Decorate with images of classic and exotic cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
- Northern Exposure...to Cool Books Build a winter wonderland or replicate a mountain cabin. Dress in sweaters, gloves, and ear muffs to get everyone warmed up to reading for fun!
- Cowabunga Books! Get ready to have some fun, fun, fun with a Fair filled with beach and surfing décor.
- Yellow Book Road to the Fair Get staff and students dressed up as favorite characters from Oz. Let your imagination take your school over the rainbow.
- Big Top Carnival Transform the library into a Big Top with carnival games, clowns, and mimes. Offer free cotton candy and popcorn with purchases.
