How We Choose Books
Once a
year, a group of 15 company experts gather to select the books
that will be featured in each season's Book Fairs. They meet
with publishers from around the country and wade through thousands
of interesting titles.
How
many books are considered?
Reviewers consider over 2,000 books presented by 30 major publishers
and over 150 smaller publishers.
How do the
book reviewers evaluate so many books?
Books are reviewed during presentations and finalists are selected
at the end of each day. Finally, the chosen books are then slotted
for specific Fairs and display units, i.e. bookcases, tables, or
box displays.
What criteria
are used to evaluate the books?
Reviewers evaluate titles based on 20 different categories such
as book covers, illustrations, content, language, cultural diversity,
character development, plot, hook, market balance and fit, current
trends, reading level, and price.
What happens
at the end of the book selection process?
Reviewers generate a preliminary Books Per Fair number (how many
copies of a book will be sold during a Fair) for each title. Additionally,
they continue to attend book conventions, visit trade shows, and review
books throughout the year to keep up-to-date on the latest releases.
