Passages Charter School was founded in 2001 by Asian Human Services, an agency that serves the immigrant and refugee communities of Chicago. Passages, with the help of an educational anthropologist on staff, has developed a set of effective teaching strategies for English-language learners and a replicable model of professional development to transport these strategies into every aspect of the curriculum. The school focuses on specific learning strategies—cooperative, thematic, and inquiry-based—to strengthen critical and higher order thinking skills. Working together in structured groups and contextualizing learning so that it is meaningful allows students to participate in dialogue, reflect, and become more engaged.
