MICROSOFT SETTLEMENTBackground In 2004, Microsoft® reached proposed settlements in a class action lawsuit alleging that the company unlawfully used anticompetitive means to maintain a monopoly in markets for certain software. As a result of this settlement, the company agreed to issue a portion of unclaimed settlement funds to State Education Agencies in 18 states and the District of Columbia. These funds are to be distributed, in the form of General Purpose and Software vouchers, to school districts to support their technology plans. The 18 states, plus DC, that will issue vouchers to schools and districts are:
Each State Education Agency is handling the distribution of funds differently, including the criteria by which individual schools can apply. However, the funds are generally available for the purchase of educational software and hardware, professional development, and more. Settlement funds will be disbursed via two types of vouchers: General Purpose and Software. Schools can buy Scholastic products using either General Purpose or Software Vouchers. General Purpose Vouchers may be used for any non-custom software, professional development services, and/or IT support services used in connection with software purchased with General Purpose Vouchers and/or Software Vouchers. Software Vouchers may be used to purchase word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, web-authoring, productivity, encyclopedia, and other desktop relational database software.* Scholastic Education is always looking for ways to help you improve education!
