Hewlett Packard and Instructor present the Create-a-Calculator 2004 Contest

How to Enter

  • Students in grades 5–12 may send in written descriptions, diagrams, drawings, or digital images of their calculator designs. Entries should focus on a calculator’s design, functionality, and cosmetics. Ideas can range from practical to fantastic, artistic to scientific.
  • Students in grades 9–12 are advised to gear their entries toward functionality: technical features, performance factors, and scientific and graphing abilities.
  • A completed copy of the entry form, available by download at www.scholastic.com/instructor, must be attached to each entry.
  • Mail poems and entry forms by May 10, 2004 to:

  • Winning calculators and runners-up will be chosen for each of two categories—grades 5–8 and 9–12—and will be featured in the September 2004 issue of Instructor, on www.hp.com/calculators, and on www.scholastic.com/instructor.
  • One (1) winner in the grades 5–8 category will receive a $2,000 award and a HP39g+ graphing calculator. One (1) winner in grades 9–12 will receive a $3,000 award and a HP39g+ graphing calculator. Five (5) runners-up in each category will receive HP calculators relevant to their grade levels. The one (1) school that sends in the largest number of qualifying student submissions will receive 50 HP39g+ graphing calculators (entries must be sent in one package). The one (1) teacher with the greatest number of students who submit qualifying entries will receive $750 toward HP products (entries must be sent in one package).

All submissions become the property of Hewlett Packard, Co. and cannot be individually acknowledged or returned. No purchase necessary. Scholastic and Hewlett Packard are not responsible for late, lost, stolen, misdirected, damaged, mutilated, postage due, incomplete or illegible entries or mail. Contest is open to residents of the United States who are currently enrolled in grades 5 through 12. Employees, and members of their families living in the same household, of Scholastic Inc. and Hewlett Packard, Co., their parents, subsidiaries, brokers, distributors, dealers, retailers, affiliates, and their respective advertising, promotion and production agencies, are not eligible to enter. Void where prohibited by law.

One entry per person. All entrants’ names, school names, grades, cities, and states may be posted on www.scholastic.com/instructor and/or www.hp.com/calculators. Winners will be notified on or after August 1, 2004. One (1) winner in the grades 5–8 category will receive a $2,000 award and a HP39g+ graphing calculator (retail value $39.95). One (1) winner in grades 9–12 will receive a $3,000 award and a HP39g+ graphing calculator. Five (5) runners-up in each category will receive HP calculators relevant to their grade levels. The one (1) school that sends in the largest number of qualifying student submissions will receive 50 HP39g+ graphing calculators (entries must be sent in one package). The one (1) teacher with the greatest number of students who submit qualifying entries will receive $750 toward HP products (entries must be sent in one package). All entrants, as a condition of entry, agree to release Scholastic Inc. and Hewlett Packard, Co., their affiliates, subsidiaries, distributors and agencies from any and all liability for injuries or damages of any kind sustained through participation in this sweepstakes and/or use of a prize once accepted.

No cash substitutions, transfers or assignments of prizes allowed, except by Scholastic or Hewlett Packard, Co. in case of unavailability, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded.

Each winner will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release within fifteen (15) days of notification attempt or an alternate winner may be selected. By accepting the prize, each winner grants to Scholastic and Hewlett Packard Co. the right to use his or her name, likeness, hometown, biographical information, and entry for purposes of advertising and promotion without further notice or compensation, except where prohibited by law. Taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners and their families.
