All products manufactured or sold by Scholastic must be tested by an independent testing laboratory to ensure that they meet applicable U.S. product safety standards, including Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA 2008) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) standards, and other applicable standards for products distributed outside of the US. Among other criteria, this testing requires that all products, regardless of where they originate, be manufactured using non-toxic inks, laminates, coatings and varnishes, and be tested for lead and other heavy metals.
While many of the products we purchase from other vendors for distribution through Scholastic channels have been safety tested to meet U.S. product safety standards, we are strengthening our standards and now require independent safety testing for all products.
For plain paper and ink publications, such as books and catalogues, Scholastic requires documented confirmation from our printers that the books contain inks, laminates, and coatings that meet CPSIA 2008 safety standards, and in some cases, an even stricter Scholastic standard in regards to lead. We take this precaution despite the fact that books are exempt from government regulated toy safety testing.
At Scholastic, the safety and well-being of children is of the utmost concern to us, and therefore, product safety is one of our highest priorities.
