SCHOLASTIC NAMES SETH D. RADWELL PRESIDENT OF SCHOLASTIC AT HOME

Appointment Reflects Increasing Focus on the Internet As a Way to Reach Parent and Child Customers

New York, NY (December 4, 2006) -- Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced the appointment of Seth D. Radwell as President of Scholastic at Home, the company’s direct-to-home parent resource for products and services that educate and entertain children.  In this role, he will also have responsibility for school continuity programs and the Back to Basics Toys division of Scholastic.  Radwell, who currently serves as President of eScholastic, the company’s online information and e-commerce division, will retain that position.   His appointment is effective immediately and he will continue to report to Richard Robinson, Chairman, President, and CEO of Scholastic.

Radwell succeeds Judy Newman, President of Scholastic Book Clubs, in the Scholastic at Home position.  Announcing the appointment, Mr. Robinson said, “For the past six years, Judy Newman has done a wonderful job of managing our direct-to-home business.  Under her leadership, it has enjoyed several strong years of high operating profits and successfully responded to the challenges of federal Do Not Call legislation with exciting new products and marketing strategies.  We will continue to pursue our strategy of building long-term, productive relationships with At Home customers, and of acquiring new customers, particularly through the Internet, with the goal of engaging families of young children ages 0 to 5 who will, in years to come, get to know Scholastic through our school-based channels. Seth’s extensive knowledge of our Internet presence and capabilities, as well as his prior experience in the marketing and metric management of consumer book clubs, will serve our company and our customers well.  This shift in responsibilities will also allow Judy to concentrate full time on our traditional Scholastic Book Clubs business, while developing new areas of that business to build on its strong relationships with classroom teachers.”

Newman has been head of the Scholastic at Home business since 2000, when it was integrated into the company as part of Scholastic’s acquisition of Grolier.  Commenting on the management change, Newman said, “One of the strengths of the Scholastic at Home business is its ability to respond to changing customer preferences.  Over the past few years, we have worked with Seth to migrate a large part of the business from telephone and print media to the Web, selling more and more of our products online.  Seth is especially qualified to lead Scholastic at Home in the next stage of development, and I know that he and the at Home team will do an outstanding job of realizing the growth opportunities that exist online.”

Mr. Radwell said, “Scholastic has a unique ability to reach customers through many channels—in schools, in bookstores, in libraries, online, and at home.  Since joining eScholastic, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a great team of people to reach families and other customers through scholastic.com.  I look forward to working with the at Home group to expand and enrich our offerings to families, and to help parents provide a superior reading and learning experience to their children.”

Mr. Radwell, a veteran e-commerce and publishing executive, joined Scholastic in 2005.  Prior to that, he was President, Marketing and Editorial Group for Bookspan, the premier direct marketer of general interest and specialty book clubs, where he was responsible for all editorial, marketing, media and Internet functions for the company, as well as new business and product development.  Before joining Bookspan, Radwell was CEO & President of Doubleday Interactive and booksonline.com where he transformed the book clubs business from a paper-based to an online enterprise, attracting new, younger audiences to book clubs and establishing new business opportunities.  He also served as Vice President and General Manager of the U.S. Market for Bertelsmann Online; as Senior Vice President, Content and Product Design for Prodigy Services Company; and as a consultant in the telecommunications and media practice of McKinsey & Company.
