SCHOLASTIC EDUCATION NAMES ANA BISHOP, MARKETING DIRECTOR, SCHOLASTIC RED 


Leader in Bilingual Education, ESL and Educational Technology to Lead Outreach For Professional Development Program

New York, NY (November 30, 2005) -- Scholastic Education, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing and media company, today announced the appointment of Ana Bishop as Marketing Director for SCHOLASTIC RED® Professional Development. An internationally recognized leader in bilingual and ESL education, Ms. Bishop will oversee all marketing efforts for the breakthrough online and in-person professional development program that helps K-12 teachers to improve their reading instruction and raise student achievement. She will report to John Lent, Vice President, Professional Development. 
 
Ms. Bishop was most recently Manager of Professional Development for the Office of Instructional Technology in the New York City Department of Education. She is a frequent speaker at NABE, TESOL and ISTE conferences and has published many articles and book chapters on professional development and the effective use of technology with English Language Learners (ELL).
 
In making the announcement, John Lent, Vice President, Professional Development said, “ Ms. Bishop’s experience and expertise in the fields of professional development, educational technology, and ESL and bilingual instruction, contribute to her deep understanding of what teachers need to help all of their students excel in reading. Ana’s experience in supporting ESL, bilingual and regular education teachers will be invaluable as SCHOLASTIC RED launches professional development programs for all educators.” 
 
Ms. Bishop has worked at IBM in a variety of management and marketing positions in the company’s K-12 division. She was also founder of an educational technology and marketing consulting business, which provided services to major U.S. and international publishers, education technology companies and large school systems, including New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Puerto Rico and New York BOCES.
 
Ms. Bishop, whose first language is Spanish, began her career as a teacher in TESOL, bilingual and migrant education programs. She earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Michigan State and was one of the first recipients of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VII Bilingual/ESL Graduate Fellowships.
 
The SCHOLASTIC RED professional curriculum combines the unique capabilities of online learning for individualized and self-paced instruction with the in-person collaboration necessary to foster effective reading instruction. Participating educators have access to leading reading researchers, motivating and interactive training, and resources and management tools for implementing reading strategies in K-12 classrooms.
 
The new SCHOLASTIC RED course, Reading Success for English Language Learners, guides teachers in grades K-3 through techniques to differentiate instruction based on students’ levels of English proficiency, monitor students’ progress through formal and informal assessments and observations, and choose and use a wide variety of engaging books, to introduce and reinforce language, vocabulary and concepts that are key to ELLs’ academic success.
