PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER JEANNE HAYES HONORED WITH INDUCTION INTO THE ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATIONAL PUBLISHERS' HALL OF FAME

-A Leader in Tracking and Interpreting Educational Information, Trends and Data Recognized By Education Industry-

New York, NY (November 11, 2002) -- The Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) has announced that on Thursday, December 5, 2002, Jeanne Hayes, president and founder of Quality Education Data, Inc. (QED®), a Scholastic subsidiary, will be inducted into its prestigious AEP Hall of Fame, which recognizes outstanding individuals whose lifetime work has made a significant impact on educational publishing. The ceremony will take place in New York at the Waldorf Astoria.

Ms. Hayes is being honored for her commitment to and leadership in tracking, interpreting and presenting trends and information on the ever-evolving education market.

Jeanne Hayes founded Denver-based QED, a leading education market research and database firm in 1981 to provide the highest quality and most extensive educational database available, the National Education Database™, which includes U.S. and Canadian educational institutions. In 1997, QED introduced its National Registry of Teachers by Name™, a database of over 4.3 million educators, telephone-verified at the school building level. Today, QED provides its more than 8,000 customers access to these databases and research services.

Since 1987, Ms. Hayes has been focused on studying technology trends in education and has conducted studies of technology installed base and intent-to-purchase in the nation's schools. These reports, Internet Usage in Public Schools and Technology Purchasing Forecast, have become annual barometers for technology trends in the nation's schools and have been cited by numerous publications and Congressional studies. She has presented this research to a wide variety of audiences including educators, product developers, legislators, trade associations and the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. Most recently, under Ms. Hayes' leadership QED has introduced new reports, Teacher Attrition and Hiring and Teacher Buying Behavior and Attitudes, which have quickly become heavily relied upon resources in the industry.

Commenting on the honor, Dick Robinson, Scholastic Chairman, President and CEO said: "Jeanne Hayes is a prominent figure in the education community, providing research, analysis and insight about the important issues in education. Under Jeanne's direction, QED has become a nationally recognized leader in supplying key data to educational institutions and has always been at the forefront of studying technology trends in schools. Scholastic thanks the Association of Educational Publishers for recognizing her notable achievements in researching and discussing important trends that affect our schools."

In addition to her role at QED, Ms. Hayes is a board member of the Software Information Industries Association's (SIIA) e-Business section and has served as one of the founding members of the CEO Forum on Education and Technology; as a corporate member and treasurer of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN); and as a board member of the Education Section of SIIA. Ms. Hayes is the recipient of numerous awards including CoSN's Private Sector Champion for 2001, eSchool News' Impact 30 for 2001 and Converge Magazine's 'Those Who Make a Difference' 2000.

In addition to Ms. Hayes, the 2002 Hall of Fame inductees are Nader F. Darehshori, retired president of Houghton Mifflin Company, and Billy C. Clark, writer-in-residence, Longwood University, VA, published author, and founder and editor of Virginia Writing.
