SCHOLASTIC NAMES MAURICIO SABENE, VICE PRESIDENT SPANISH PUBLISHING

Scholastic, the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books, announced this week the appointment of Mauricio Sabene as Vice President, Spanish Publishing. Reporting to Hugh Roome, President of Scholastic International, Mr. Sabene will be responsible for Scholastic operations in Latin America, including wholly owned subsidiaries in Mexico, Argentina and Puerto Rico, as well as for Lectorum, a Scholastic company, and the largest publisher and distributor of Spanish books in the United States. In addition he will work closely with several other Scholastic divisions to expand the long range publishing of the company for the Hispanic market, including the Spanish editions of elementary magazines, Let's Find Out and Scholastic News-grades 1-2; Club Leo, Scholastic's U.S. Spanish Book Club and Scholastic Library Publishing's, Cumbre, a Spanish encyclopedia now sold in the U.S and Puerto Rico.
In making the announcement, Mr. Roome said "For over l0 years, Scholastic has made a strong commitment to publishing in Spanish. With the number of Latino children in the United States increasing, we know that there is a strong demand for children's books in Spanish in the trade, in classrooms and in school and public libraries. Mauricio Sabene brings to Scholastic proven abilities in managing high growth opportunities in Latin America, along with his strong understanding of operations, finance and marketing. I am confident that under Mauricio's leadership, our Spanish language publishing initiatives both in the U.S. and in Latin America will greatly expand and flourish."
Mr. Sabene was born in Argentina and was educated there and in Mexico where he received a BS in electrical engineering from Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City. He has an MBA with a concentration in finance and marketing from Columbia University in New York. He has been Chief Financial Officer for Avon Mexico, one of Avon's largest subsidiaries, and more recently, CEO of Avon Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
